A Day in the Life of a TOSH Student
A day at The Old School House begins with a breakfast to ensure that students are ready for the day ahead. Then into school for 30-minute daily starter, this can be Phonics, Nurture Group or Emotional Literacy. These activities helpstudents to settle into learningbefore beginning Maths.
Maths is a 1 hour 15 minutes daily lesson covering a different subject each day, we begin with checking knowledge from the day before and then move onto the day’s lesson. It is then time for a30-minutebreak, giving students time to play with peers, building on their social skills. Studentsalso get time to have a drink and a piece of fruit.
Next lesson is English which is 1 hour 30 minutes. The lesson begins with checking knowledge from the previous day when we encourage students to talk about and discuss the subject. English will follow on over the term as students will be working towards AQA unit awards. Each Monday this session is filled with Swimming where students can gain certificates and Wednesday is PE which covers a wide range of activities, building on teamwork and social skills.
Lunch is 1 hour from 12.30-1.30 where staff join the students for lunch at the table in the dining room where we all interact and chat about the day using or social skills. There is a wide variety of healthy food choices available. On a Friday we have a hot lunch which is prepared by the students. All students have a daily chore and help to clear up after lunch, after lunch there is time to play games or watch TV.
Afternoon session is 1 hour from 1.30-2.30, this can be a variety of subjects from Art, ICT, Science and Humanities. These lessons are based on a termly topic, building on the previous lessonover a few weeks to gain an AQA Unit Award.
Afternoon break for 15 minutes gives students a chance to have a biscuit and a drink and most importantly to stretch their legs and chill out.
The last part of the day consists of finishing any work, Spellings, Handwriting Practice, and a Phonics recap. We then end the day watching Newsround and discussing what is going on in the world.
3.30 is home time.

Attendance
The Government states that an attendance rate of less than 95% will have a detrimental effect on a child’s education. It is therefore the school’s aim that each of our pupils should have an attendance rate as high as possible with our target for attendance being at least 97% each academic year unless there are exceptional circumstances, out of the child’s control, that affect their attendance at school. If this is the case, the school will support that child and their family to ensure that their attendance rate is as high as it can possibly be.
Please ensure that all absences are reported to the school by 9.00am on the first day of absence.
